Two Year Old at Dentist?
Mommyto2 asked:
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. About 6 months ago, I took my 2 year old to a Pediatric Dentist. His teeth had a white line through the front two in the middle of the teeth. The dentist proceeded to tell me that it was my fault, because I developed an infection late in pregnancy that made him not develop enamil on the front two teeth. (This is true, I was attacked by my dog, a chow at 36 weeks pregnant and they almost lost both myself and my son). The dentist then told me that he will not treat it or clean my sons teeth until he can sit in the chair by himself. The dentist had a very big ego and made me feel like such a bad mom. He told me that I needed to practice better hygeine with him. I was already brushing his teeth two times a day, I left the office crying. He made me feel like a horrible person and mother, like this was my fault and I did it intentially. Well, I was looking at my sons teeth again today, and they look much worse. I think they need cleaned and possibly treated. As I said he refused to do that until he will sit alone and I know he's too young for that at this point. We have another appt with him on Tuesday, because my son is pointing at his mouth and saying "owi". I just want to know if I can go in and if he doesn't want to clean them, if I can push him and ask that he do that. I have looked for other dentists, but there are not many, and most of them are in the ghetto. I can't get a good referral from anyone regarding one. I called my dentist and that's all that they could give me. My question is, has anyone had their two year olds teeth cleaned and/or treated? If they did, how did they do it? If anyone knows of any good pediatric dentists in Central Ohio/Columbus area, I would be grateful for their information. Thank you!

Most dentist will give a two year old who needs dental treatment anesthesia. That dentist was a jerk who should never be allowed near children. Ask your son's pediatrician for a referral.

That dentist should have never treated you like that. I would call the office and complain first thing. They don't have the right to treat you like that.
My son is 7, and I found a dentist office that specializes in kids dentistry. That is what I would recommend.
I did a Google Search, and this particular dentist has great reviews.+-+columbus+oh&fb=1&split=1&gl=us&view=text&ei=JhnvSaKZIInoM5uy9aMB&cd=7&hl=en&sll=39.994270,-83.015847&sspn=0.138268,0.086250&latlng=40049884,-83019866,1032410568741484201
I hope this helps, and remember, say something to someone about your treatment. If you don't, he'll do the same to someone else.

Im in texas so i don't know about ohio, sorry.
I took my son who is 2, when he was 1 and he was very scared. I haven't taken him since, i just keep a close eye on his teeth.
That doctor had no right to treat you this way. At all, you can't go in there in a push him. But if i were you, i would get all my courage and say what is on my mind. That he better do the right the thing or you can report him, whether to the city, or call the newcasts so they can call him out and refer you to local agancies that can put that doctor straight.

I have ALOT of experience with the dentist..lol..I have five kiddos..And my kids have always sat in my lap until they were three-four years old.. There is no reason your dentist could not clean your babies teeth while he is sitting on your lap..it is more comfortable for him and would make it easier on the dentist anyway.. I ran across a Dentist like that once..she actually screamed at my son.."because he was crying to loudly???" I could not believe it..I scooped my son up and never went back. Sometimes we have to be tactfully aggressive when it comes to getting medical care for our kiddos..What I would do if I couldnt find another dentist..is talk to the hygenist..his "nurse" and tell her that you would be more comfortable if she was the one to clean your sons teeth..Make up something about him being more comfortable with girls..lol..and when it comes time to treat..be stubborn and let that dentist know you want something done…asap…there is mild sedation..if they need to treat him..my son had dental surgery when he was three.. Good luck to you from a mom of five =)

I have two kids a 5yr old and a 2yr old. I double their appts. It is a little trying to contain two kids but when you get back there with them, it's alot easier. My daughter saw my son do it no problem (and by the way our dentist let them sit in the seat together and let my daughter "hold" the light and "hand" him tools) then they switched and she had no problems with what the dentist was doing. But IMHO that dentist was a jerk. It was not your fault that a dog attacked you and you got sick,it happened, and it's over, what he should be asking now is OK HOW CAN WE FIX IT. Finding a new dentist is definitely the right thing to do!! GOOD LUCK!!

Wow what a jerk of a dentist I wouldn't take my child back to him and let him earn money off of me. The line threw is teeth could also be due to trauma like he feel and hit them my oldest has this problem at the bottom of his teeth God knows he fell SO many times when he was little so who knows when he actually did it. The dentist needs to clean his teeth and put a sealant on them don't take no for an answer he is your Son and you don't want him to be in pain. my boys got there teeth cleaned at the age of 2.

wow what a jerk–I have a 4 year old and a 3 year old, and I called around because I didn't want to got to a dentist that wouldn't let me be with my child while being treated. I found one that only schedules children on a certain day of the month, and they dress up and give prizes and are very Professional. I would report him.

Your dentist is a big headed jerk. Sorry, but that's the truth. You need to find a new one for your child ASAP and stop going to this guy. How is it your fault you were dog attacked when pregnant and what does that have to do with how your sons teeth developed? It doesn't. That's like saying if your kid stubs their toe when they learn to walk that their teeth will all become crooked. Nonsense.
Also for him to criticize you and demand a 2 year old sit perfectly still- does this dentist live in reality?! I don't know a single 2 year old who sits perfectly still for anything more than a couple minutes at most. They are all going to be on the go because they have alot of exploring to do and don't want to sit!
Definitely find yourself a more patient dentist with children and one that doesn't have so many attitude problems with the parents of the patient.

Does Ohio State have a dental school try looking there either for a referal or possibly care. Actually I found a link look below. OUr regular dentist has had our kids in the chair since they were a year old we just statred bringing them with us so both are very comfortable with him and have had cleanings. he encouraged us just to stop by with the kids anytime we were in the neihborhood just so they could visit and play and become familiar with the surroundings and staff. Our dentist is also the Dentist on call for emergencies at our preschool. You could ask your local day care centers if they have someone on call that they recommend.

First all, you're not a bad mum at all! Don't let that man make you feel like that. If it were me, I'd go to my doctor and ask if he can tell you of any good dentsits in the area. Sorry I live in New Zealand, so I have NO idea!! I would also complain about the dentist he shouldn't be practicing dentistry if he treats people like that. Good luck with everything, I hope it all works out for you!
